Wu Changshuo was a leading artist who specialized in both calligraphy and painting. At age thirty-one, he conducted extensive studies of ancient calligraphy from stone steles and drums as well as bronze seals before creating his own seal script. This couplet is written in seal script, known for its rounded form and even strokes, revealing the archaic style of Qin script of the 3rd century BC. Here, the lyrical lines praise the good virtues and values that are passed down through generations. The couplet transcribes from right to left: 大人虎章導埶允碩,公子麋秀族里之華。
