Couplet in Seal Script (Translation)
篆書八言聯 近現代 吴昌碩 紙本墨色 (Primary Title)
Wu Changsuo 吴昌碩, Chinese, 1844 - 1927 (Artist)
Wu Changshuo was a leading artist who specialized in both calligraphy and painting. At age thirty-one, he conducted extensive studies of ancient calligraphy from stone steles and drums as well as bronze seals before creating his own seal script. This couplet is written in seal script, known for its rounded form and even strokes, revealing the archaic style of Qin script of the 3rd century BC. Here, the lyrical lines praise the good virtues and values that are passed down through generations. The couplet transcribes from right to left: 大人虎章導埶允碩,公子麋秀族里之華。
