Yijing or I Ching (the Book of Changes) is an ancient Chinese divination manual produced nearly 2,500 years ago. This painting illustrates a lone man reading the Yijing in the remote mountains. Heavy foliage, solid cliffs, and deep valleys evoke the profound and mysterious text that has impacted so many fields of study, among them cosmology, religion, and medicine. In this painting, Feng Jianwu, a leading artist from Sichuan Province, recalls his many expeditions to mountain sites across China.
