Folies Bergere - Liane de Pougy (Primary Title)
Paul Berthon, French, 1872–1909 (Artist)

Berthon designed this poster in the style of his teacher, Eugene Grasset, whose
influence is evident in the female figure’s bold outlining and the intricate
patterning of the yellow irises in the foreground. This poster advertises the
notorious courtesan Liane de Pougy’s first appearance at Paris’s renowned
performance hall, the Folies Bergère. Berthon depicted a golden web behind the dancing de Pougy,
as if she herself is the spider referenced in the performance’s title, L’araignee d’or (The Golden Spider).
