Page from a Ragamala Series: Gujari Ragini (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
This depiction of Gujari Ragini shows a courtly lady wistfully conversing with a confidante who, like her, holds a vina. The two are joined on the terrace of a grand palace by female attendants and a pair of peacocks, birds closely associated with the monsoon. The showy one between the two ladies certainly symbolizes the lady’s absent lover, making clear the subject of their discussion. Clouds gather over the scene, from which, as described in the verses above, a welcome drizzle of rain will be induced by the sound of the lady’s singing.
