In this peaceful seascape, low tide reveals glisteningly wet rocks along a cove on the Canadian island of Grand Manan. The distinctive shoreline, which alternatively combines rolling bluffs with serene, arcing beaches, was a preferred sketching spot of Alfred T. Bricher, the popular painter of New England marine scenes. Repeatedly visiting the island over the last decades of his life, the artist increasingly found himself sharing the retreat with tourists who sought seaside recreation at the island’s several inns, traveling there via fashionable steamships each summer. A beached dinghy and the lowering of the closest fishing vessel’s sails heighten an atmosphere of relaxation and a pause from labor.
