The carved decoration of this jar—a combination of carved acanthus leaves and lotus petals—demonstrates the eclecticism of later Indian ornament. The acanthus motif was first introduced to India from the Greek and Roman West and used extensively in Gandharan art, but then disappeared until the Mughal period. The lotus, on the other hand, is one of India’s very oldest and most continuous artistic motifs.
