Female Head (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
This
head is most likely from a funerary monument carved in high relief. The depth
of the carving—almost in the round—helps date it to the late Classical period,
shortly before such luxurious monuments were banned in Athens under the
sumptuary laws of 316 BC. In antiquity, an earring was inserted in the hole in the
right earlobe and the whole monument was painted in bright colors.
