Lehmbruck’s figurative sculptures often reveal a classical attitude. From 1910 until 1914. he lived in Paris, studying the work of French sculptors Auguste Rodin and Aristide Maillol. Their influence is apparent in this serene cast-cement torso from 1913, which shows little of the attenuation and other distortions visible in his later work.
