Like the tall vessel to the far left, this broad-shouldered container is a gulabpash, used ceremoniously to sprinkle rose-scented water on honored guests or privately as part of one’s personal toilette. The silhouette of this example probably imitates the shape of Mughal-period flower vases. It is sumptuously decorated with gilding and engraved floral designs set off by black niello. The other sprinkler’s intricate repoussé and chased decoration features around its body a delightful band of foliage inhabited by squirrels and birds.
