Vernet here depicts two stallions fighting in an unpopulated landscape. The scene demonstrates the Romantic artist’s interest in the savage and sublime. Vernet, one of Théodore Géricault’s mentors, painted and drew horses throughout his long career, applying his keen eye for natural detail to the stallions’ musculature and subtleties of color.
