Miss Judith Morice, later Mrs. George Lee, as Diana (Primary Title)
Catherine Morice (nee Paggen) as Diana (Former Title)
Allan Ramsay, Scottish, 1713 - 1784 (Artist)
Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, was renowned for her chastity—which suggests that this portrait was probably commissioned before the subject’s marriage in 1742. Allegorical portraits associating sitters with the virtues of goddesses, gods, or saints were immensely popular during the Renaissance. However, such pictorial conventions were eventually abandoned in the late 18th century for more naturalistic modes of representation.
