Sitting on an openwork pedestal, this small cup may have originally featured a lid, evident from its straight, vertical rim design. Archaeological discoveries in the Gaya and Silla kingdoms in the southern Korean peninsula suggest that plain, undecorated stoneware with low pedestal bases, as exhibited in this case, were made for daily use, while those with more elaborate decoration and high pedestals may have been created for funerals or ritual purposes.
