Morisot depicts the sky, ocean, and beach of Les Petits Dalles near Fécamp, a favorite vacation spot in Normandy for the artist and her family. Like Manet in his earlier On the Beach, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Morisot renounces topographical details in this scene to lend emphasis to the figures on the beach. Unlike Manet’s composition, however, Morisot’s beach scene is uniformly rendered with her characteristically loose brushstrokes, and the converging horizon lines conform to the natural perspective seen by the human eye. The even lighting of the scene is undramatic yet atmospheric, and it appears to have been sketched by the artist from her position on the boardwalk in a single sitting.
