Sir Mark Masterman Sykes's Hounds with Huntsmen (Primary Title)
SIr Mark Masterman Sykes' Hounds (with Huntmen) (Former Title)
Henry Bernard Chalon, English, 1770 - 1849 (Artist)
Inscriptions on the frame identify all the participants in this lively but orderly hunting scene. The patron, Sir Mark Masterman Sykes, was such an avid sportsman that he apparently had a standing arrangement with Digby Legard, the manager of hounds, to be ready for a hunt at a moment’s notice. Sir Mark was also a noted man of culture and a famous bibliophile (his prize was one of the first printed editions of Livy, published in Rome in 1469).
