The scene on the front of this vase is the Judgment of Paris with the god Hermes, holding his caduceus (staff), leading the three goddesses—Aphrodite, Athena, and Hera—toward Paris. The goddesses’ skin is rendered in white, a convention that Greek artists adopted from Egyptian art to distinguish male and female figures.

The Antimenes Painter, one of the most skillful Greek vase painters, depicted the Return of Helen on a second vase in this case.
