The 2017 Teen Stylin’: Alchemy program marries creative fashion design with the principles of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Student designers will select a masterwork from VMFA’s permanent collection and, using creative construction and alternative material-application techniques with the opportunity to create electrically powered wearable works of art.

In addition, students will have free access to view the stunning jewelry and haute couture fashion designs appearing in VMFA’s special exhibitions, The Rachel Lambert Mellon Collection of Jean Schlumberger (Feb 11–Jun 18, 2017), and Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style (May 6–Aug 27, 2017) to draw inspiration from when developing their garments.

The free, eleven-week fashion program held February through May 2017, in VMFA’s Pauley Center Studios, includes an orientation session and ten fashion design workshops during which students work to create innovative garments inspired by the museum’s stunning permanent collection. These studio classes are designed to provide additional vocational skills, serve as information sessions for students seeking higher education and portfolio development In addition to the design workshops, VMFA will host a series of registration-based Saturday workshops, accessible to both Independent Study students and campus students.

Students between grades 6–12 are selected through an application process designed to serve as a practical experience in applying for higher education or competitive programs.
