The Moran Hill in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, was one of Hasui’s favorite spots in Korea. During his trips to Korea, Hasui created two designs focusing on the same site. In the 1939 version (2019.492), Hasui rendered a bird’s-eye view of the pavilion, while this 1940 print shows a distant view from across the river. In this latter, more picturesque composition, the Moran Hill is soaring above the Taedong River, while a man is boating in the rain, and two visitors in the pavilion enjoy the surrounding scenery.
