A Nobleman Arriving to Inspect Racehorses at Newmarket (Primary Title)

John Wootton, English, ca. 1682 - 1764 (Artist)

ca. 1732–35
oil on canvas
Unframed: 26 1/2 × 46 1/8 in. (67.31 × 117.16 cm)
Framed: 33 3/4 × 53 1/2 in. (85.73 × 135.89 cm)
Wootton’s naturalism is evident in this scene of workaday activity outside a “rubbing-down house” at Newmarket – one that was probably reserved for the use of the king and nobles. Particularly striking evidence of his careful observation is provided by the portraitlike treatment of the trainer in the foreground.
