This statuette of Aphrodite is based on a fully clothed 5th-century image of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. In designing this composition, the artist depicts her seminude (a Hellenistic Greek motif) to emphasize her sensuality as she adorns herself with the help of a mirror. Aphrodite’s son, Eros (whose name means “desire”), holds a cosmetic box. Such complicated terracottas were assembled from mold-cast pieces and painted with bright colors.
