Milly Steger received early acclaim for her architectural sculptures, leading to commissions for public city buildings in Hagen, Germany, where she had moved in 1910. Her forms were influenced by the work of Auguste Rodin and Aristide Maillol, with whom she had studied in Paris, as well as by Cubism. In 1918 she returned to Berlin, where she began to work in a more expressive style, reflected in this portrait bust.
